A Love Strengthened by Duty: The Home Team Couple Who Thrives Together

Most romances aren’t forged amidst the rumble of fire engines. For MAJ Lillian Cheah and LTC (NS) Koh Chee Wee, however, their times together in the SCDF became the foundation for their partnership, which is now in its 22nd year.

A Fire Station may seem an unlikely place for romance to blossom. Yet for LTC (NS) Koh Chee Wee, Unit Commander of the 12A Rescue Unit, Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), and MAJ Cheah Ooi Gek, Lillian, Senior Plans Officer in HQ SCDF, it was where their relationship began.

FIRST DATES AND BEYOND

When did it all fall into place for them? Chee Wee remembers it well. “After the RCC, I was posted to Paya Lebar Fire Station, while Lillian was posted to Tampines Fire Station. As Tampines Fire Station was still undergoing construction, Lillian was posted at various junctures to the Division Headquarters, Changi Fire Station and Paya Lebar Fire Station, where I was,” he shared.

Lillian remembers that she made the first move. “His birthday was around the corner and I asked if he had any plans. When he said no, I asked if he wanted to spend the day with me,” she said. Chee Wee chimed in, “I just agreed and did not think too much about it.”

For Chee Wee and Lillian, their shared experiences as SCDF officers helped them to understand each other better. “It’s nice to have someone who understands,” Lillian recalls.  Her peers in other professions struggled to understand her challenges at work. With Chee Wee, however, that understanding was implicit.

When asked what drew them to each other, Lillian says, “He’s very reliable, smart, and rational. You know that he will definitely be there for you through thick and thin for the rest of your life.” To this, Chee Wee adds, “She’s very observant and notices the little things. She would always give me little reminders so that I don’t forget anything. To me, she has all the qualities of a good wife and mother.”

Chee Wee and Lillian kept their relationship low-key.  Lillian shared, “Not many people knew that we were together until they received our wedding invitations!”

STAYING IN SYNC, INTENTIONALLY

Chee Wee eventually transitioned to a career with the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF). Throughout, they continued to support each other closely. Chee Wee introduced a thoughtful practice which he calls the “Advice or Listening Ear” check. Whenever Lillian returns home and starts talking about her day, Chee Wee often asks, “Would you like advice, or just a listening ear?”

Lillian admits that initially the question felt too clinical and cold. She wondered why he was being objective but soon saw the wisdom in it. “He needs to know what I actually want,” she explains. If she wants to share, he listens. If she wants advice, he chips in with his counsel.

With his past experiences in SCDF and his willingness to lend a listening ear, Chee Wee often helps Lillian to navigate the challenges she faced. In turn, Lillian’s steadiness and attentive nature provides the stability and reassurance which Chee Wee appreciates.

GROWING WITH EACH OTHER

Perhaps the greatest test for them is parenting their three children, aged 8, 13, and 16. When dealing with a teenager’s growing pains, they learned to respond with greater patience and a willingness to listen.

Looking back on Chee Wee’s career transition to MSF, Lillian observes that he has grown significantly. “I think he has transformed into a better communicator and is very patient with the kids. I’m thankful for his support and I’m very proud of who he has become.”

MUTUAL ADMIRATION AND DEEP CONFIDENCE

Chee Wee and Lillian feel that true strength comes from being aligned with each other at various points in life.

As a couple trying to balance their careers with a growing family, their story feels familiar because it resonates with many of us. For them, support does not require big gestures. It can be as simple as doing work over a cup of late-night tea, or the simple act of asking what your spouse needs before trying to fix things.

When asked if they have any advice for couples, Chee Wee says, “For me, it is to listen more and talk less.” Lillian emphasises that couples should “be there for each other and make it last for a lifetime.” This simple and sincere advice speaks volume of an unspoken confidence in their relationship and a deep love for each other.

Your Hari Raya 2026 To-Do List: Prep, Shop, and Give Back with HomeTeamNS’ Sinar Raya

From bustling Raya bazaars and festive marketplaces to meaningful ways to give back, HomeTeamNS’ Sinar Raya brings everything you need to get celebration‑ready all in one place.

Chinese New Year has barely ended, but Ramadan is already well underway. And before you know it, Hari Raya Aidilfitri will be here in the blink of an eye, and you’ll find yourself scrambling to get matching baju raya for your family and prepare enough rendang, sayur lodeh, and kueh to feed your relatives.

If just the thought of the massive crowds and traffic jams is already giving you a headache, fret not. Skip all the frantic mall-hopping and simply head over to HomeTeamNS’s clubhouses in Bedok Reservoir, Bukit Batok, and Khatib to get all your Hari Raya shopping done in one shot.

Get your Notes app ready, and let’s start checking off your list of things to do for Hari Raya.

SECURE YOUR FESTIVE ESSENTIALS EARLY

As with any other Hari Raya rendition, the golden rule of thumb is to get all the big-ticket items out of the way first. Some may call this kiasu, but you know better: the very first weekend of March is the perfect time to call first dibs on the best snacks, outfits, and furniture.

Your first stop is Jom Raya Marketplace at HomeTeamNS Khatib. Running from 6-8 March 2026 (11 am – 8 pm), this pre-Raya marketplace at the Level 1 Thoroughfare boasts a curated selection of Hari Raya necessities such as festive treats, traditional attire, home décor, gift items, and daily essentials.

If you’re a Westie then check out Raya Fiesta at HomeTeamNS Bukit Batok during the same period from 6-8 March (11am – 8pm). Situated at Lobby A, you’ll find a similar selection of Raya products and treats, ready for you to prep for the upcoming celebrations in one convenient space.

From 5-30 March, HomeTeamNS members can visit any HomeTeamNS clubhouse, count the ketupats displayed around the Hari Raya centrepiece, submit your answer through the mobile app, and stand a chance to win a delightful Hari Raya cookie set worth $68. A sweet treat for a keen eye! The contest ends on 30 March 2026, 8pm and 6 lucky winners will be contacted before 3 April 2026.

SURVIVE THE LAST KOPEK RUSH

Your house is clean, the decorations are up, and the ingredients are ready for the big cook-off on Hari Raya morning. You think you’re all set but wait: you realise you’ve forgotten to get new décor, and your relative from overseas suddenly dropped you a text to say that they can make it after all.

You’re not alone in your final frenzy, and this is where the Last Kopek Bazaar at HomeTeamNS Bedok Reservoir comes in to save the day. Done in collaboration with Mamanda, this bazaar will run at Level 2 Atrium from 9-15 March 2026 (12 pm – 9 pm), where you can stock up on your finishing touches with Hari Raya kueh, festive clothing, décor, and more.

GET YOUR GREEN PACKETS READY

With the last kopek prep done and dusted, your next—and probably most important step—is to get the green packets ready. Before you head to the bank to withdraw fresh notes, make sure you have beautiful sampul duit raya on hand to slot them in.

And where better to get your sampul duit raya than HomeTeamNS? From 6-20 March 2026, simply visit any HomeTeamNS clubhouse and complete these steps to get your complimentary green packet:

  1. Head over to the dedicated Hari Raya photo spot at any HomeTeamNS clubhouse
  2. Take a photo
  3. Post it on Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #RayawithHomeTeamNS2026
  4. Follow HomeTeamNS on Facebook or Instagram
  5. Show your post to the onsite ambassador
  6. Collect your complimentary sampul duit raya pack (1 pack comprises 6 green packets in 2 design variations)

SHARE THE BLESSINGS

While you’re busy getting things ready for the Raya festivities, don’t forget to practise the true spirit of Ramadan: charity, empathy, and community spirit. Once you have your family sorted, it’s time to extend some of this warmth to families in need.

From 20 February to 14 March 2026, participate in the Gift It Forward campaign at all three HomeTeamNS clubhouses, held in collaboration with FairPrice and in support of Fei Yue Community Services.

Between 20 February and 6 March 2026, members and the public can contribute $25 to sponsor a FairPrice curated food pack or make a monetary donation via a QR code, which will go towards supporting families in need during the festive season. The packs will then be collated and distributed to families under Fei Yue’s care before Hari Raya. Monetary donations via the Fei Yue QR code will continue to be accepted until 14 March 2026, allowing contributors to support the cause even after the food‑pack sponsorship period ends. Find out how you can do so here.

This campaign allows you to give back to the community in a meaningful and tangible way, sharing your blessings with the people who need them most.
