Cultural Extravaganza returns to bring our distinctive SINGAPO人 culture in the spotlight! This year’s festival features an exciting lineup of 10 programmes comprising performances and exhibitions by renowned local arts groups. Come enjoy our SINGAPO人 Treasures from 8 May to 30 June this year!
First introduced in 2017 along with the opening of the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC), Cultural Extravaganza showcases the vibrancy of our distinctive local Chinese culture. With an exciting array of events by the best of Singapore’s Chinese arts and cultural groups, the art festival highlights the crossovers between disciplines, cultures and generations.

1 | The Pawned Wife 典妻 | 9, 10 and 12 May, 3pm 11 May, 7:30pm Auditorium | The Pawned Wife is a blend of traditional Teochew opera and contemporary theatre, featuring an international award-winning production team and local talents! The production brings to life the tale of a poor rural family in China. Unable to pay rent due to crop failure, they reluctantly agree to the landlord’s demand to have the farmer’s wife pawned as his concubine for three years in exchange for money to treat their sick son. Despite hardships and mistreatment, the wife longs for her family and promises to return after the debt is settled. Three years later, she returns to find her son Chunbao dying. Devastated, torn between her past and present, she can only pray for her children’s well-being and dream of a reunion that will never be. |
2 | Jazz It Up! A Jazzy Celebration of Chinese Songs 2024 | 18 & 19 May, 7:30pm Auditorium | Jazz Association (Singapore) (JASS) returns with the fifth instalment of the Jazz It Up! series: A Jazzy Celebration of Chinese Songs 2024! Jazz It Up! 2024 will highlight renowned English and Cantonese pop singer Teresa Carpio (杜丽莎). The concert will also feature local Cantonese singer Wysom Wong (黃偉深) and singer-songwriter Serene Koong(龚芝怡). Enjoy an evening of jazzy renditions of well-loved Chinese evergreens and modern-classic songs performed by the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO), led by JASS Senior Associate Music Director Weixiang Tan. |

4 | A Singaporean Composer Series | 25 & 26 May, 7.30pm Auditorium | A celebration of 20 years of the TENG Ensemble and its signature East-West fusion music and instruments! The Singaporean Composers Series features ten commissioned works across genres by 20 composers, producers, filmmakers and designers. Immerse yourself in a musical odyssey that showcases the unique diversity of Singaporean artistry, alongside four documentaries featuring the producers and composers! Featuring the works of:

5 | Disappearing Series…: Childhood Melodies of Yesteryears “消逝中…”:古早童谣叮当响 | 1 Jun, 3:30pm and 7.30pm Auditorium | Ding Yi Music Company returns with the third edition of their cultural series! Disappearing Series…: Singapore Songs spotlights Singapore’s musical heritage, specifically childhood songs.
Helmed by Artistic Director and Conductor Quek Ling Kiong, and featuring disappearing dialect nursery rhymes and iconic Chinese, Malay and Indian folk songs from Singapore, these classics will be presented with a contemporary twist!

6 | A Choral Extravaganza | 8 & 9 Jun, 4.30pm and 7.30pm Recital Studio | Be blown away by this choral performance – the first in Cultural Extravaganza’s history! A Choral Extravaganza highlights the classical art of choral singing, by showcasing local talents and re-interpreting classics. Once a prominent musical tradition in Singapore, A Choral Extravaganza seeks to revive and maintain the legacy of this classical art form, emphasising its significance in the cultural landscape. 7 | Essentially Macbeth | 15 Jun, 7.30pm Auditorium | Essentially Macbeth tells the story of a group of ex-drama club members coming together to stage Macbeth in order to rekindle their passion for the arts they felt 10 years ago. By coming back to theatre, they find themselves re-examining their life choices and asking the same question they had before – what is the meaning and purpose of the arts in their lives?
Directed by Judy Ngo, with an original score composed by Phang Kok Jun and conducted by Moses Gay, Essentially Macbeth is a collaboration between NUS Chinese Drama and NUS Chinese Orchestra and explores what success, ambition and fulfilment mean to today’s generation.
Not your ordinary theatre experience, this production promises a unique experience with actors and musicians performing alongside one another to dynamic live music. |
