Though trained as an architect, CPL (NS) Sharne Sulaiman has always had a deep connection with music. \u201cMy grandfather is local composer Seong Koon Low Won (\u4e0a\u5b98\u6d41\u4e91), who wrote famous songs like Midnight Kiss <\/em>(<\/em>\u5348\u591c\u9999\u543b<\/em>) <\/em>and Walk Faster<\/em> (<\/em>\u884c\u5feb\u70b9\u5566<\/em>)<\/em>,\u201d shares the 30-year-old. \u201cFrom the beginning, I was exposed to all sorts of music. I don\u2019t remember a moment where my family was not gathered around the keyboard or listening to something on the speaker.\u201d<\/p>

While his grandfather wrote prolifically in Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, and Hakka \u2014 often mixing in Malay in keeping with the \u201cNanyang flavour\u201d of the 1950s \u2014 Sharne charted his own musical path. He fell in love with musical theatre at the age of 10, after watching The Phantom of the Opera, <\/em>and taught himself keyboards, guitar, drums, and violin.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Over the years, he\u2019s embraced a wide spectrum of genres, from opera to jazz. \u201cOpera is gesamtkunstwerk<\/em> \u2014 a complete work of art,\u201d he explains. \u201cEvery element \u2014 from the music and lyrics to the staging\u00a0\u2014 drives the story forward, and that level of compositional genius fascinates me. Jazz, on the other hand, is all about tension and complexity within the chords.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

These days, Sharne puts his musical skills to good use, performing annually at charity concerts and making regular appearances at musical theatre open mic nights.<\/p>

He even had performing experiences during his National Service (NS), when he served as a Staff Assistant to the Director at the Police National Service Department (PNSD). At one internal event, he took the stage with fellow officers \u2014 an experience that, he says, helped bring them closer.<\/p>

In 2023, he returned to the spotlight at the HomeTeamNS Awards at HomeTeamNS Bedok Reservoir<\/a>, where guests were treated to his soulful renditions of classic tunes such as Proud Mary<\/em> and Man in the Mirror<\/em>.<\/p>

Another unforgettable moment from his NS days? A Hari Raya celebration back in 2013, where Singapore Idol<\/em> finalist Faizal Isa performed Black or White<\/em> with the Singapore Police Force (SPF) Band. \u201cI dare say it\u2019s the best version of the song I\u2019ve ever heard!\u201d he enthuses.<\/p>

Motivated by how much his NS journey shaped him, Sharne volunteers on the HomeTeamNS Strategic Review Committee (since 2022) and the Branding & Publicity Committee (since 2025). \u201cSeeing HomeTeamNS grow is truly satisfying,\u201d he says. \u201cHelping to keep it at the top of its game is my way of giving back, so that NSFs and NSmen are rewarded and recognised for their service.\u201d<\/p>

For Singapore\u2019s 60th<\/sup> birthday, we asked Sharne to fill in the blanks and share the songs that define his love for local music.<\/p>

Every National Day, the NDP songs I just can\u2019t help singing along to are\u2026<\/strong> Home<\/a><\/em> by Kit Chan and Count On Me Singapore<\/a><\/em> by Clement Chow because they have a special place in my heart.\u201d<\/p>

When I think of the local TV shows I grew up watching, the song that reminds me most of them is\u2026<\/strong> Phua Chu Kang<\/a><\/em>\u2019s theme song because it\u2019s retro and quirky.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

The homegrown artiste whose music I enjoy most is\u2026<\/strong> Dominic Chin. He\u2019s a fantastic singer and songwriter. My Love<\/a><\/em> and CLSE2U<\/a><\/em> are my favourites \u2014 the former shows his range, and the latter is heart-wrenching.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

A Singaporean indie band I really like is\u2026<\/strong> The Steve McQueens. I recommend Hephaestus<\/a><\/em>, because its jazz-inspired musical structure is mind-blowing.\u201d<\/p>

A made-in-Singapore song I enjoy in a different language is\u2026<\/strong> Midnight Kiss<\/a><\/em> (\u5348\u591c\u9999\u543b<\/em>) by Seong Koon Low Won. It\u2019s arguably my grandfather\u2019s most famous song and I\u2019ve been hearing it ever since I was born. I\u2019ve also performed it many times and it\u2019s always a hit with audiences.\u201d<\/p>

The song that best describes growing up in Singapore for me is\u2026<\/strong> Singapore Town<\/a><\/em>, because living here is about exploring new places and finding happiness.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

A song that I associate with older members of my family is\u2026 <\/strong>Dick Lee\u2019s Fried Rice Paradise<\/a><\/em>, because my parents seem to sing it every time we order fried rice.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

One song I love belting out with my NS mates is\u2026<\/strong> Stand Up For Singapore<\/a><\/em>. It\u2019s literally what we do at Parades \u2014 stand up!\u201d<\/p>

A local song that always lifts my mood is\u2026 <\/strong>cool with it<\/a><\/em> by brb because it\u2019s such a cheeky bop.<\/p>

One wild card that deserves to be on my SG60 playlist is\u2026<\/strong> SAR21<\/a><\/em> by Of Methodist. It\u2019s such an unserious take on NS and captures the shared experience that all Singaporean boys go through.<\/p>

Asked about his wish for Singapore\u2019s music scene, Sharne highlights the need to develop young, aspiring musicians. \u201cI hope more Singaporeans take the time to discover and support our incredible local talents,\u201d he says. \u201cPick a few and be true fans \u2014 show up at their gigs, stream their songs on Spotify, and support them however you can. This way, we can uplift homegrown stars to the national, regional, or even international stage.\u201d<\/p>
