In a 2018 study of nearly 26,000 women, <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2717565\">25 per cent of those who followed the Mediterranean diet had less risk of developing cardiovascular disease over 12 years.<\/a> The main drivers for this were attributed to changes in inflammation, blood sugar, and body mass index.<\/p><p>There are also increasing reports that support its role in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2072-6643\/9\/7\/674\/htm\">supporting slow ageing and cognitive health<\/a> as well, <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10654-017-0330-3\">especially for men<\/a>.<\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/a-practical-guide-to-the-mediterranean-diet-2019032116194\">Mediterranean diet fundamentally does this in two ways<\/a>, by upping nutrient intake through generous servings of <strong>vegetables and fruit<\/strong>, and by relying on the use of monounsaturated fats. One of the biggest changes is <strong>using olive oil<\/strong>, which is a healthier fat that lowers total cholesterol and bad LDL cholesterol levels.
